Operation of the PowerMax automatic transfer switches:
Both of the PowerMax's work the same way.
There is a circuit board (time delay board) in the housing
and one, two or three relays - depending on the model.
The PM has two inputs, one from shore power (utility power)
and one from a secondary power source such as a generator
or inverter.
There is one output which goes to the distribution panel in
the vehicle.
In the relaxed state, shore power passes through the transfer
switch into the vehicle's 120 volt / 240 volt system.
When the time delay board sees power from the secondary
power source it either instantly disconnects the shore power
and passes through the secondary power or it waits (if the
delay switch is set to "on") twenty to thirty seconds before
breaking shore power and passing through the secondary
power.
This makes sure that only one power source supplies your
vehicle.
The time delay board is used when the secondary power
source is a generator.
The delay can protect against two things happening.
Some generators produce high voltage spikes on start-up
which can damage equipment in your vehicle - the delay
allows the generator to "settle down" before passing power
from it into the vehicle.
In a situation where you have a heavy load (such as an
air-conditioner) operating from shore power, the delay
allows the generator to come up to the proper operating
speed without bogging it down and stalling out the engine.
